We were delighted towards the end of last week to see exactly no rain in this week's forecast. The week or two before we had had at least a little rain just about every day, and we wanted to take advantage of the clear weather to make the cabin a priority. (The amount of time saved by not having to cover everything up each night and uncover it each morning!)
When we went up Friday morning, Mick's plans to start building were delayed by a cement truck. Turns out Gary (our mason) had the same idea as us, to take advantage of the rain-free weather. We certainly didn't mind the delay, they did a beautiful job finishing the basement floor, and we have already begun to move into our beautiful basement.
Meanwhile, up on the first floor, Mick worked very hard to finish framing the walls and the loft floor. My very rough estimate of the number of nails he pounded in: easily a thousand. (No wonder his hands hurt!) And at least a hundred different pieces of lumber measured, cut to size, nailed or screwed together, and attached in some fashion to the log walls or subflooring. Here is Mick working with Bob Lonsberry (via the radio at the base of the ladder) to attach the (almost) last of the loft joists.
Roscoe's job while all of this was going on was to find the most comfortable place to sleep -- apparently a difficult task, given the changes in angle of the sun and cloud cover. He seemed to manage alright though.
The progress that Mick made in just a few days was absolutely staggering! These pictures provide a sort of panoramic look. The first is taken from the great room, looking toward the entry closet (on the left) and the master bedroom.
This muddled mess of walls completely confused me (like I said, at least a hundred pieces of lumber...), but it looks from the doorway toward the master bedroom (the tall wall on the left), the two bedroom closets and the hall closet (towards the middle), the smaller bedroom (in the back corner of the cabin), and the bathroom (to the right).
Looking over the joisted bedroom ceilings towards the not-yet-joisted bathroom.
From the loft floor over the bathrooms, looking out over the master bedroom toward the great room and beyond.
Mick's favorite part this week seemed to be setting in place the solid posts and beams. Can you believe people pay more money for the pine without the knots and cracks?!
We hope you will visit us soon!
In the meantime, Mick will lead you on a two-video guided tour of our home (this is before the beams and posts). Welcome! :)
WOW !!! -that looks so great. Loved the videos and can't wait to see it this summmer.
