Mick's folks were gracious enough to share their vacation days with us last week! We had a great visit with them and enjoyed camping and cooking out. We ran out of meals for the watermelon they had brought, and they left that with us. Thank you! A few smoothies later, there wasn't much watermelon left but the rinds, which we broke into several pieces and tossed into the poultry pen. The chickens (with some help from the geese) did an impressive job cleaning up the rinds.
This hen (in the rear of the picture) was running around with a sizeable chunk of fruit she had procured for herself.
I kept trying to get a picture of two hens next to each other working on a rind, but they didn't spend much time in the same place. They kept moving from piece to piece.
Does this picture look similar? Different location, same movement by the same hen just as I snapped the picture. She really didn't want to miss out!
One of the other things we did with Marty and Heidi was check the depth of the water in the well. Without its cap, our well is a long dark tunnel with a bizarre sort of echo when you talk into it.
Mick lowered a string with a socket tied to the end of it until he heard a faint splash. For our 260-foot well, Mick was expecting water around 150 feet, and I wasn't looking for anything above 200 feet. So we were quite surprised to discover the water level at 80 feet!
Heidi had a great idea, that we should try the water! Mick tied the string around an old-fashioned canning jar (which Marty and Heidi had conveniently picked up at a garage sale) and retrieved the water.
Boy, was the water delicious, cold and clear. Hooray for well water! We are almost accustomed to our hyper-chlorinated village water and are looking forward to clean water!
We loved it! and are so happy for the pump too. HUGE thank-you to Marty!
